Islamic Calendar Uniformity
Kalender Islam
At the end of last Ramadhan (18/4) in the Media Gathering activity in Yogyakarta, the Chairman of PP Muhammadiyah, , stated that the uniformity of holidays through the reckoning method is a necessity.
Kalender Islam
He gave an example of how formerly Kiai Ahmad Dahlan perfected the Qibla direction based on astronomy (astronomy) and earth science (geography). Kiai Ahmad Dahlan's endeavor through Muhammadiyah to standardize and perfect the Qibla direction required at least 100 years for the people to understand and accept, and this has been proven and strengthened by a government decree, in this case the Ministry of Religion, through Qibla direction certification.
The belief of the Ketum PP Muhammadiyah regarding the uniformity of this holiday must be guaranteed by all of us. In fact, the determination of the uniformity of holidays, especially Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha, is likely to occur more quickly than the refinement and uniformity of the Qibla direction which takes about a hundred years. It is not impossible that in the next 10-20 years, uniformity in determining the feast day (Islamic calendar) can occur. This belief is based on 3 (three) strong reasons
First , Technology and Information. The development of information technology at this time can help spread knowledge and information through various platformsmedia. Social media channels have been massively used by most Indonesian people. People can get information easily anywhere and anytime. Information regarding a systematic explanation using basic logic regarding calendar calculations based on astronomy makes it easier for the public to accept that the determination and calculation of the moon's circulation can be done accurately. These calculations can be known for conditions tens or even hundreds of years to come. Astronomical calculations that can be accepted with reason will make people understand and believe that the determination of the beginning of Ramadan and holidays through reckoning of the hilal is valid and acceptable.
Second , in the next few years the population of Gen Z and Gen Alpha will continue to erode the percentage of boomer and X genes who are flat and rigid in character, reluctant to confront and break the rule.. Stillman (2017) argues that Gen Z characters are breakers of things they consider inconsistent with logic and rules, teamwork or collaboration and are proficient in technology/digitalization. Just look at how a short video containing the opinion of a student about the depravity of development in a province in Sumatra some time ago went viral. Not only are the ways of working of officials "bare" by netizens, but their digital traces of the past, their wealth and even their families are "skinned" out. The characteristics of Generation Z have a big effect on changes and reforms in the bureaucratic system, especially the government bureaucracy. Technical matters such as determining the start of Ramadan and holidays can be done with the use of technological advances and digitalization.
Third , the number of studies, seminars and discussions in the community. Much discussion and discussion about calendar calculations based on astronomy is carried out to provide an understanding to the public that calculations based on science can be known easily. This is in line with Kiai Dahlan's statement, that the rejection of renewal ( tajdid ) occurs due to a lack of knowledge, so the da'wah method used is not frontal but by approaching and embracing, namely by providing knowledge and knowledge.
It is hoped that the uniformity of the Islamic calendar can have a positive impact on society. First, social impact. There is certainty in the community in arranging their schedule of activities because there is no possibility of the Idul Fitri shifting. Communities can determine homecoming schedules, order transportation tickets and so on. In addition, there is reduced social friction and debates that are repeated every year about differences in the determination of the beginning of the month (Ramadan and Hari Raya). Second, the determination of holidays using the reckoning method also helps the business world, especially MSMEs.
Business actors need certainty in doing business, at least regulatory, legal and bureaucratic certainty. One of the much-needed certainty is the determination of the feast day which is carried out in advance. The certainty of determining holidays will have an impact on determining company holidays, setting employee work schedules, supplying raw materials and other business operations.
All of these variables have an impact on costs or costs. Third, last but not least , the certainty of determining Eid holidays has an impact on the household, where mothers have certainty in preparing Eid meals and dishes. They don't need to worry about warming food and dishes because of the shift in holidays determined by the government.
The uniformity and certainty of determining the time for holidays (Islamic calendar) by the government does not negate the ijtihad of other mass organizations who choose the ruyah system in determining the beginning of the month. This determination merely provides certainty for the community and the business world to make plans related to activities on national holidays, so that the social and economic activities of the community will run well, and at the very least, the budget for the ISBAT meeting can be diverted to activities that are more beneficial and impact on the people. Walllahu a'lam.
